Contact plates are the core of all adapters, and in its most simplistic form feature two metal contact rails that slide into the battery.
More advanced contact plates come with an additional third contact that provides analog thermal sensor information:
The latter can be useful for high-current use cases where you need to keep an eye on the battery temperature, yet in most scenarios the two-contact plate is sufficient.
Since 3-contact plates are less common, they are significantly more costly. Do not use such plates unless you really need access to the battery temperature probe.
